Effects of Climate Change on Sri Lanka

Speaking at an awareness session on “Global Warming and Climate Change Adaptation” held as part of the 4-day Community Based Disaster Preparedness (CBDP) Workshop in April 2012, Dr.Ranjana Piyadasa of the Department of Geography, University of Colombo said that experts have warned about extreme weather conditions that may arise in Sri Lanka, damaging agriculture, natural water resources and the environment while a possible sea level rise will also affect the coastal economy. Globally, he said, sea levels are projected to rise 0.18 - 0.59 meters by 2100 (based on observed rates of ice flow from Greenland and Antarctica).

Dr. Piyadasa quoted Prof. Mohan Munasingher, Vice Chairman of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) who had said in 2008: “A major part of Jaffna and other northern areas of Sri Lanka will be submerged when the sea-level rises. So, people are fighting and dying over areas that may soon not be there”.

The CBDP Workshop was organized by Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC in collaboration with Caritas SED-Galle. Caritas Asia was the main supporter of this programme which was held in Galle and Hambanthota.
