WOMEN TOWARDS A FULLER LIFE - Theme of Caritas IWD celebrations
Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC celebrated International Women's Day (IWD) on 8th March with a group of nearly 400 women of the Dehiwela-Attidiya area, at the Jayasinghe Hall in Dehiwela.
Welcoming the participants, Mr Newman Fernando, Senior Executive Manager said that the Caritas Women's Desk is specially dedicated to addressing the issues faced by women in many fields and to ensuring their well-being. He pointed out that IWD is basically meant to celebrate the achievements of women in the social, economic and political fields. Equally important, IWD is a reminder to us that any society which fails to ensure the safety, equality, empowerment, education and health of women cannot and will not make real progress, Mr Fernando stressed.
The day's events included reflections by several resource persons on womanhood and the changing role of women.
Rev. Sr. Ushani of the Caritas Women's Desk who was instrumental in organizing the IWD event under the theme "WOMEN TOWARDS A FULLER LIFE" said in her address that women are a gift to society. Yet, there is no end to the challenges faced by women and this is evident from the reports we see daily in the media, she pointed out.
