Housing for war affected families in the East

A total of 135 houses built for war and tsunami victim families in Poonahari DS Division of Kilinochchi District and  Allaipiddy village in Jaffna District were handed over to the beneficiaries on 29th and 30th April respectively in the presence of the Bishop of Jaffna, Most Rev Dr Thomas Savundranayagam, the National Director of Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC, Rev Fr. George Sigamoney, representatives of the Government Agents of Jaffna and Kilinochchi Districts and senior Military officials of the area. Among others present at these events were Rev Fr Regno Bernard, Director of Caritas HUDEC Jaffna, Rev Fr A Yavis, Director of Caritas HUDEC Vanni and senior SEDEC officials.

40 of these houses were funded by Caritas Italiana, 25 by Caritas UK CAFOD and 70 by Caritas France - Secours Catholique. A notable feature in the houses made ready for occupation by the beneficiaries was that besides the Caritas allocation, the families themselves, through their personal contributions, had made various additions and improvements which enhanced the value of their dwellings.

At the same time on 28th April, 40 fishing boats with engines and outboard motors as well as fishing nets were handed over by Caritas to another group of war and tsunami victims in Selvapuram in the Mullaitivu District under its livelihood support program. This assistance was  jointly funded by Caritas Slovenia and Caritas Portugal.
