Caritas Sri Lanka conducts a series of Sessions & Demonstrations on Solid waste Management (SWM) in Kandy & Kurunegala

A Resource team from Caritas Sri Lanka-SEDEC National Centre, conducted a total of three training sessions and demonstrations on Solid Waste Management on September 25 – 26, 2017 in Kandy and Kurunegala, aiming at creating awareness on the problem of waste management practices in Sri Lanka while enhancing the knowledge of the participants as to how they could initiate meaningful actions to bring solutions to the waste management crisis, using the 3R+ Takakura Composting Methodology.

The first of the three  programmes was conducted for the Priests in the Diocese of Kandy on 25th of September at which the Bishop of Kandy, His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Vianney Fernando and a group of nearly 40 Priests in charge of Parishes and Catholic institutions from the Diocese participated.

Later on the same day, a ToT programme (Training of Trainers) was conducted for the entire staff of Caritas Kandy-SETIK. The participants had a chance to enhance their knowledge on the current situation of the waste management problem in Sri Lanka through numerous practical, theoretical examples and data presentations in addition to the waste segregation techniques.

They were also made aware of the famous 3R Concept (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) and received hands-on experience on composting using the famous Takakura Composting Methodology.

The significance of the Takakura composting methodology is that a household could transform its carbonic kitchen waste into organic compost or fertilizer within 2-3 weeks of time, in comparison to the conventional composting methods which require at least 3 months.

On the second day, 26th of September, another ToT was conducted for all staff of the Caritas Kurunegala-Janasetha centre.
The objective of the ToT sessions is to capacitate the diocesan staff to further the mission of Caritas Sri Lanka-SEDEC, especially in creating awareness and knowledge of proper Solid Waste Management at diocesan level for its people.

The participants of the ToT programmes showed great eagerness to learn about the Takakura composting method using kitchen waste. Several participants promised to spread the message of waste management and expressed the wish to join the Caritas led SWM Programme to further popularize the 3R+ Concept and to take the message to the grass root levels to reach out to a wider community.
