Non-affected dioceses show solidarity for flood victims

Our National Centre in Borella has been receiving in the past few days a large amount of relief items meant for flood victims in the affected areas. Significantly, this is a gesture by people living in unaffected areas like Colombo who have collected various goods such as food and non-food items, drinking water bottles and books for school children who lost all their educational materials, among other things. Already some of these consignments have been dispatched by the National Centre to the Anuradhapura and Batticaloa dioceses where the Caritas diocesan centres themselves are involved in relief efforts of their own. In fact they moved into action overnight when the flood disaster struck and have been doing their utmost to care for the affected people of their districts. The steady stream of sympathy and compassion for the affected thousands has been symbolic of the spirit of solidarity demonstrated by the Sri Lankan people for their countrymen in times of adversity, disregarding ethnic and religious barriers in a show of unity.
