LEP2007

Wednesday 21 st February 2007 marks the beginning of the Lenten period. It is an important time for all Catholics around the world. The forty days of Lent enable us to prepare for Easter by prayer, fasting and penance.

Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC the social arm of the Catholic Church will facilitate the Lenten programmes throughout the country through its local network organizations in the diocese

The Theme “Protect Life” was defined by the Catholic Bishop's Conference as this year's Lenten Theme. The theme was chosen to highlight the pain and agony of Jesus and link it to the suffering of all humans at every stage of life.

The theme is also relevant to the Sri Lankan context as there is an increase in violence and many lives are snatched away mercilessly due to many reasons such as brutul murders, abortions and drug addictions. The themes of the Lenten Programmes which are conducted annually are also chosen based on the Lenten message of the Holy Father and also on the existing social and political situation of the country.

Six sub themes were also developed to coincide with each week of Lent namely, Protection of unborn and unwanted, Protection of children, Protection of youth, Protection of family, Protection of Adult hood and Means to Life.

Fr. Damian, National Director of Caritas Sri Lanka in his Lenten Message said that he hopes this years Lenten programmes will create a deeper awareness among Christians and urge them to find ways and means to Protect Human Life from its Inception till Death.
