Galle Handing Over Schools
New facilities for Suriyawewa National School and Mamadala Maha Vidyalaya

Students of Suriyawewa National School and Mamadala Maha Vidyalaya in Hambantota received new school buildings and sanitary facilities such as a block of toilets and water tank with the capacity of 5000 liters on the 2 nd February 2007 by Caritas SED Galle. Rebuilding and refurbishing these schools were a part of the Caritas SED Galle's school rehabilitation / reconstruction programme in Galle , Matara and Hamabantota Districts. “These beautiful schools now provide students with ample space and facilities so that they are developed to their fullest potential with a passion for life-long learning and readiness to serve others,” stated Sasa Veljanov, Base Manager, Caritas SED Galle,Hambantota.

Soon after tsunami these schools were turned into IDP camps in the district, housing nearly four hundred (400) displaced in Mamadela Maha Vidyalaya and around five thousand (5000) people in Sooriyawewa National School .

Caritas SED Galle was responsible for construction of two new buildings and furnishing Suriyawewa National School of 3900 students. They also renovated four school buildings, built a block of toilets and installed a portable water tank with the capacity of 5000 liters in Mamadala Maha Vidyalaya which is a zonal school with around 1233 students.

As the social arm of the Diocese of Galle, Caritas SED Galle has been working for the social and economic development of the region for over thirty years irrespective of religious, ethnic or cultural differences. “After the tsunami devastation caritas SED Galle has channelled all their strength and dedicated the whole capacity to create a better tomorrow for the tsunami victims,” stated Rev.Fr. Damian Arsakularatne, the Diocesan Director. Caritas National Centre and Caritas Internationalis a confederation of over 162 Catholic relief, development and social service organisations has supported the diocesan centre in providing immediate relief, medical assistance, housing, livelihood recovery, education and rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure after tsunami.
