Caritas Poland funded Scholarship programme has been functioning for almost one year since it started on the 01 st December 2005. One thousand five hundred children island wide receive SLR.2000.00 each month from their foster parents in Poland for their education. The programme was initially intended to reach only the tsunami affected children in Sri Lanka but later was changed to cover 1500 underprivileged children in the whole island most of them being Tsunami affected.
To reap the best of this scholarship programme, special training was given to the coordinators of the programme prior to implementation and quarterly reviews are conducted since implementation.
The success of this programme lies in the support given by all those involved in it from the national level to Diocesan level including the schools principals and Teachers who have been following the improvement of the students that receive the funds regularly.
Children are encouraged to write to their foster parents in Poland and maintain regular contacts to inform of their improvements.
In two dioceses beneficiary children voluntarily contribute SLR.100.00 every month from the amount they get from their foster parents to help children who need financial help for studies in their villages. In Negombo, in the west of Sri Lanka , 47 children voluntarily contribute money to get tuitions for Mathematics and English which not only support their own education but nearly six hundred students in the area.
Two year since the programme's implementation children seem to reap the benefits of the amount they have been given. According to the teachers and principals there is significant progress made by children as, now their financial problems have are minimized thanks to their foster parents in Poland. |
