DAMAGE:
Tsunami affected nearly 70 per cent of the coastal belt of Sri Lanka in the Northern, Eastern and Southern regions. Of those who died 50 per cent were children, 30 per cent women and 20 per cent men. A further 5,644 are missing. Over 15,000 people were injured in the mayhem.
The disaster affected 232,677 families - it destroyed nearly 79,000 houses and damaged over 41,000 homes. An estimated 74 schools were destroyed and 102 badly damaged, impacting on education throughout the country.
