Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC will organize an All Island Debate competition in view of its 50th Jubilee Celebration which falls this year.

The main objective of this competition is to create awareness among the school children on the importance of their role in promoting peace, reconciliation and social justice while supporting logically and rationally for the sustenance of a peaceful society. We believe that this initiative will enhance their knowledge and will motivate them to actively participate in the process of national reconciliation and to promote good governance in future. We presume that this venture will lead to the creation of a team of ambassadors who will voice for the rights of people and for sustainable democracy in the country.

This initiative also takes into consideration the recommendation of the LLRC report 9.255, which underlines the importance of peace education in promoting unity and reconciliation.

After having completed the diocesan level competitions, each diocese will select 2 winning teams. At the final event scheduled to be held at Aquinas College of Higher Studies, 26 teams representing 13 Caritas Diocesan Centres will compete against each other. The competitions will be held in both Sinhala and Tamil mediums.
