On the recommendations of the National Director, Rev. Fr. Mahendra Gunatilleke, the Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka has approved the appointment of Dr. Shemal Fernando as the New Senior Executive Manager (SEM). He was welcomed by the Management and the Staff of Caritas Sri Lanka- SEDEC on 2nd of January 2019 at a befitting ceremony.

Dr. Shemal Fernando possesses diverse experience in varied genres. He is a professional, an academic, a reputed athlete, an eminent sports administrator, a freelance journalist and a humanist who is keen to expand his horizons. With an unblemished and decorative professional career spanning 38-years, he has become one of the longest served flag rank naval officers in the country. Through his charisma and candour, he has given the country a dynamic personality.

A distinguished product of St. Mary’s College, Negombo and Royal College, Colombo, he has achieved Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy and Master of Science in Management degrees from the Kotelawala Defense University. He also earned an Executive Master of Science in Administration through a IOC Scholarship. He is an alumnus of the renowned Unites States’ Naval War College.

He holds fellowship of the Charted Institute of Management and the Institute of Management of the United Kingdom as well as fellowship of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Institute of Certified Professional Managers of Sri Lanka. Dr. Shemal Fernando’s contributions to sports earned him many a public accolade. He has authored an array of research papers and over 200 scholarly articles.
