From June 20th to 21st, 2025, the peaceful surroundings of Arunodaya Retreat Centre in Athurugiriya came alive with the vibrant spirit of youth, faith, and unity as 68 young participants from across Sri Lanka gathered for the Ecumenical Youth Programme. This transformative two-day initiative was jointly organized by Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC, the National Christian Council (NCC), and the National Commission on Interreligious and Ecumenism, with the generous support of Caritas Norge.

Participants arrived from multiple locations including Colombo, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Chilaw, Kandy, Jaffna, and Batticaloa bringing with them a rich diversity of Christian traditions and cultures. The programme was designed to create unity, understanding, and collaboration among youth from different denominations by promoting dialogue, shared spiritual experiences, leadership development, and faith-based social action. It was held under the inspiring theme: “Empowered in Christ, United to Shine in Joy and Faith.”

The event also brought together several other key stakeholders, including Rev. Fr. Emil Denis (Director, Caritas Ratnapura), Rev. Fr. Priyal Janaka (National Communication Director – Ecumenism and Interreligious Affairs), Rev. Sujithar Sevanayagam (NCC), Rev. Fr. Dileepa Eranda (Bishop Secretary – Anuradhapura ) and the staff of Caritas Sri Lanka as well as NCCSL.

The programme featured a series of thought-provoking and engaging sessions facilitated by experienced facilitators. Rev. Fr. Jeevantha Peries opened with a powerful session titled “Jesus Challenges the Youth”, encouraging participants to live boldly and faithfully with purpose and inner peace, guided by the Holy Spirit. Through personal reflections, emotional engagement, and Scripture readings, the youth were invited to deepen their spiritual understanding and find meaning in their faith journeys.

Mr. Ralston Weinman led the second session on “Ecumenism and Youth Formation”, emphasizing the significance of Christian unity in cultivating strong, compassionate, and spiritually grounded youth leaders. His session provided practical insights into integrating ecumenical values into youth ministry while honoring diverse Christian traditions.

To encourage interaction and break down social barriers, a series of lively group games such as Balloon Tower and Newspaper King and Queen were organized. These activities not only brought joy and laughter but also conveyed Christian values like teamwork, humility, creativity, and unity. Rev. Fr. Priyal Janake later reflected on how these simple activities echoed deeper spiritual teachings and Christian life principles.

A highlight of the first day was the “Life with Music” session led by Rev. Fr. Shiran Chamaka. Through a meditative blend of Sinhala and Tamil spiritual songs, the session created a space for emotional reflection and cultural appreciation. The day concluded with a dynamic cultural evening where seven youth groups showcased their talents through song, dance, and performance—celebrating creativity, diversity, and unity in Christ.

On the second day, Rev. Sr. Rasika Peiris guided participants through two meaningful sessions: “Joyful Witnesses of Christ”, which inspired the youth to reflect Christ’s joy in their lives, and “Youth as Peacemakers”, focusing on their role in reconciliation and peacebuilding. These sessions included practical activities and open discussions that encouraged active engagement and leadership.

The final session brought everyone together in group discussions to plan future ecumenical initiatives. Participants shared ideas on expanding outreach, strengthening inter-church collaboration, and using social media to promote unity and faith among young people.

The programme concluded with a heartfelt closing ceremony, where certificates of participation and tokens of appreciation were awarded. Throughout the two days, young participants demonstrated deep respect for one another’s faith traditions, a genuine desire for spiritual growth, and a strong commitment to unity in diversity. The Ecumenical Youth Programme not only created a space for shared faith and friendship but also empowered a new generation of Christian youth to lead with love, compassion, and conviction in today’s world.
