Caritas Sri Lanka, in collaboration with Caritas Ratnapura – Sethmini and with the generous support of AGIAMONDO, successfully conducted a two-day residential workshop titled “Building Bridges: Bringing Plantation Youth Together for Peace and Leadership” on the 24th and 25th of June 2025 at the Buluthota Retreat Centre.

This workshop was specially designed for youth from the tea plantation estates  of the Ratnapura diocese.  Although these young people possess a rich heritage, many continue to face challenges such as poverty, limited access to education and resources, and a lack of opportunities for personal growth. Misunderstandings and divisions between communities often further isolate these youth, making it harder for them to connect, collaborate, and realize their full potential.

In response to these realities, the workshop aimed at  providing  a safe and supportive space where young individuals could come together to learn, share, and grow. The objectives included promoting mutual respect among different religious and cultural groups, encouraging pride in personal identity and heritage, equipping participants with basic peacebuilding and leadership skills and creating a platform to build friendships across plantation estates.

Thirty youth aged between 16 and 29 participated in the workshop. The sessions were thoughtfully structured to guide them through a meaningful journey of self-discovery, learning, and collaboration.

The opening session encouraged participants to explore their personal and social identities while also understanding the inherent dignity of every human being. The subsequent sessions introduced them to the basics of peacebuilding and leadership.

One of the key highlights of the workshop was a session on emotional intelligence, which focused on personal management and emotional regulation. This was especially relevant in helping youth learn about the social tensions, misunderstandings, and harmful behaviors in their communities. By the end of the two days, a noticeable transformation was observed among the participants. Youth who were initially shy or hesitant became more confident, taking the lead in discussions and group tasks. They also developed strong bonds of friendship and mutual respect, overcoming barriers that often divide communities.

The workshop also strengthened the relationship between Caritas, AGIAMONDO paving the way for future initiatives that support youth-led peacebuilding. Many of the participants expressed a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to contribute positively to their communities as young peace ambassadors.

Caritas Sri Lanka extends its heartfelt gratitude to AGIAMONDO for funding this impactful initiative and to Caritas Ratnapura – Sethmini for hosting the event with care and dedication.
