Awareness Session on the Attempts to Legalize Abortion in Sri Lanka
– The Church’s Perspective

An awareness session on government-led attempts to legalize abortion in Sri Lanka will be held at Caritas Sri Lanka- SEDEC on the 23rd of April 2018, at 10:00 a.m.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness on the background of attempts to legalizing abortion in Sri Lanka and why the Catholic Church is opposing the act.

The concept of legalizing abortion in Sri Lanka has been a topic widely discussed in the recent past, and as a result the Government has proposed to make certain amendments to the existing legal framework with regard to abortions.

The session will be chaired by Rt. Rev. Dr. Norbert Andradi OMI and synthesis of the programme will be given by Dr. Swinitha Ranasinghe, the President of the Catholic Doctors’ Guild. The panel of speakers include:

Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Fernando – Viewpoint of the church, Bible references and Papal pronouncements.
Dr. Maxie Fernandopulle – Views of doctors and their colleagues; Past and the current status.
Dr. Romanie Fernando – A Catholic gynaecologist’s view on abortion.
