Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC with support from the Rotary Club of Capital City, Colombo helped Caritas Anuradhapura to set up a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant to provide safe drinking water to the residents of Kaluagala and Kudagama village in the Anuradhapura district. There are thousands of families in the North Central Province including Anuradhapura district who are suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin (CKDu) which has been attributed to lack of safe drinking water. This project will help minimize the spread of CKDu by helping people to access safe drinking water. The RO plant will provide approximately 5,000 liters of safe drinking water per day and help about 1,500 direct and indirect families to benefit from the project.
The foundation stone for the project was laid on 14th November 2019 in the presence of officials of the Rotary Club of Capital City and Fr. Bennet Mellawa, Director, Caritas Anuradhapura and staff members. The construction of the plant was completed and handed over to the community on 7th March 2020.
Funding support for this project was provided by North Bank Rotary Club of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, USA and Rotary Club of Capital City, Colombo, Sri Lanka with supporting funds from Rotary International District 7720 of Eastern North Carolina, USA.
