On the 30th of June 2025, Caritas Chilaw hosted a programme titled “Session on Pope Francis’ Peace and Reconciliation Teachings”, supported by CAFOD. The event brought together diverse participants—including beneficiaries, stakeholders, diocesan directors, programme coordinators, and other peace advocates—to reflect on the values of healing, forgiveness, and peaceful coexistence inspired by Pope Francis.
Running from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., the session featured an engaging and thought-provoking presentation by Rev. Fr. Dr. Hari Haran, Doctor in Theology and Director of Youth in the Diocese of Ratnapura. His session aimed to translate the values of Pope Francis’ peace messages into actionable steps that could be embedded in the participants’ lives and in their ongoing work in conflict transformation and reconciliation.
At the beginning, Fr. Hari Haran faced some challenges connecting with the audience, who appeared tense and reluctant to open up. Recognizing this, he skillfully integrated breathing exercises to help the group relax and participate more freely. One of the notable observations was how, despite initial hesitation—especially among young Muslim girls—the environment gradually transformed into one of warmth, confidence, and mutual respect. By the end, even the shyest individuals were contributing openly.
The programme created a rare opportunity where both youth and elders shared a common platform to exchange thoughts on peacebuilding. Activities were interactive and practical—rooted in games, dialogue, and reflection—which helped the group internalize the importance of being “artisans of peace,” a theme that ran consistently throughout the event.
The most unique aspect of the session was its inclusive nature. Representatives of all four major religions in Sri Lanka were present, symbolizing unity and the collective desire for reconciliation across faiths and communities. The session was not just theoretical—it was a practical immersion into the spirit of Pope Francis’ teachings on compassion, dialogue, and cultural harmony.
Participants expressed a strong desire to continue such engagements and to explore more ways to “meet the culture in one frame.” The event served as a significant milestone in fostering interfaith and intergenerational dialogue, reinforcing the idea that peace is not just an abstract concept, but a way of life that needs to be practiced, nurtured, and shared.
Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC remains committed to creating safe, inclusive spaces where diverse voices can come together in the spirit of understanding, healing, and lasting peace.
