Caritas Jaffna-HUDEC organized a felicitation ceremony for the students who have excelled in the grade 5 scholarship examination 2017, on 15th of November 2017. Under the Caritas Korea funded project titled ‘Supporting Primary Education for Poor & Vulnerable Children’, HUDEC sponsored 202 poor students from the 12 schools in the Jaffna District.
Out of sponsored students, six of them have passed the grade 5 scholarship exam while fifty students have scored more than 100 marks.

The certificate award ceremony was presided by Rev. Fr. S. Eugene Francis, Director of Caritas Jaffna- HUDEC and Mr. Yu Hwa Li, Senior Executive Manager of Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Mrs. Padmini Kirihena, National Coordinator of the project and Mr. Nobert Uthayakumar, Divisional Education Officer of Chankanai were the other special guests present at the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Li congratulated the successful students, whom he commended for having persevered in their studies despite great adversity, including lack of food, neglect and marginalization of the schools. He also praised the efforts of the parents and the respective Principals and Teachers for their commitment and contribution to the success achieved.

Three students from Urumpirai RCTMS, one student from J/Vaddukodday West AMTM School, one student from J/Thuraiapa Vidiyalayam Colombagam and one student from J/St.James Boys School have been able to get marks above 155. This is the first time in more than 100 years of history of Urumpiral RCTMS and J/Vaddukodday West AMTM, students have achieved above the cut out marks in the Grade 5 Scholarship examination.

At the ceremony the students were awarded with certificates while Bank Saving Account books were handed over to them with the support of Cargills Bank. Each savings book had an initial balance of Rs.1150.

School Principals, teachers, parents and HUDEC staff participated at the ceremony at the occasion. Further, the students were given educational materials, nutritional food pack, school bags and shoes under the project.
